The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. A Not So Meet Cute - Meghan Quinn

A Not So Meet Cute by Meghan Quinn
Genre: Romance

Blurb (on back of book): From USA Today bestselling author of The Highland Fling comes a brand new romantic comedy about a desperate billionaire seeking to find a fiancée. This modern day take on Pretty Woman is brilliantly clever and hilariously page-turning.
How did you two meet?
The quintessential question asked to every couple. And the answer is usually some bubbly, lovey dovey tale of being struck in the bum by Cupid’s arrow.
My meet cute (well not so meet cute) is slightly different. I was trolling a wealthy neighborhood in Beverly Hills, searching for someone to take me as their bride, you know, to make my arch nemesis jealous who consequently just fired me.
He was stomping around the block like some sort of gorgeous ogre, mumbling about a business deal gone wrong and attempting to finagle his way out of it.
And that's when we bumped into each other.
There were no sparks.
Not even a hint of blossoming love.
But next thing I knew, I was scarfing down free chips and guac, listening to this man lay out all of his problems which led to his big ask . . . he wanted me to be his Vivian Ward, you know, from Pretty Woman--minus the frisky behavior.
We're talking about living in a mansion, intimate double dates, and pretending we were head over heels in love . . . and engaged. Can you imagine?
The absolute audacity.
But people do crazy things when they’re desperate. And I reeked of desperation. So, I struck up a deal.
My one big mistake, though . . . big . . . HUGE? I accidentally fell for the incomparable Huxley Cane.

MY OPINION: ***

I am officially back in my romcom era and I am so excited to get back into the swing of things. I am remembering why I love reading and what types of books I love to read. I started reading this on a whim because it was free on Kindle and I unfortunately do not have a Kindle Unlimited subscription but want to get into reading on Kindle more.

It was very cute but wasn't my favorite thing of all time. Lottie has just been fired and is dealing with a really awful "friend" who is more of an enemy than anything. Desperate, she goes out on a walk through a rich neighborhood in a crazy effort to find a rich husband, and lo and behold, she actually bumps into a rich guy and hits it off with him.

Well, sort of. Huxley is desperate to find someone willing to act as his fake fiancee after he accidentally told an important businessman that he was engaged with a pregnant fiancee to connect with him on an emotional level.

I wasn't a huge fan of the fake dating trope in this particular book. The entire premise is about them having a not so meet cute but tbh, I feel like the way they met was unique and actually kind of cute. The only reason it wasn't was because it was a fake relationship basically built on lies and desperation. I usually love the fake dating trope but something about this one was not hitting the same, which was disappointing.

Huxley is a very robotic, emotionless man and I didn't really care for him all that much. This is a billionaire series so he is very hyperfocused on work and making money, which was very offputting. I don't usually read billionaire romances for a reason and this wasn't a huge exception. I did enjoy the way he started to open up more as he got to know Lottie and fall for her, showing his first real emotions.

The outings with the other couple that they are faking their relationship for were hilarious and crazy. They basically are things you would do if you were actually pregnant but given that Lottie very much so was not, it was very unusual and fun to read about them going through the motions.

The third act conflict was very lackluster and contrived but overall, I wasn't a huge hater of it. The relationship between Lottie and Huxley was generally very cute and steamy, and it was fun to read. I love a good romcom and finished this in a couple of days. I also LOVE the banter between Huxley and his brothers and love their relationship so much, which immediately made me intrigued to read his brothers' respective stories. I also really loved Kelsey, Lottie's sister, even though it was the general opinion that she is very much so disliked by readers. I don't know what's wrong with y'all, she was really just keeping it real.

It's dual POV which is my favorite, and I loved seeing the various events of this book from both Lottie's and Huxley's perspectives, because each had such different takes on everything since their personalities were so different.

Lottie's frenemy who I cannot remember her name of at the moment was a BITCH and I hated her so much. It was actually ridiculous how awful she treated Lottie and I loved seeing Lottie slowly growing confident enough to stand up for herself with Huxley's help. I know so many girls like her in real life and it's just so sickening to see how someone can treat someone else like that.

At the time I am writing this review, I have since finished the entire series and have decided this was my least favorite of the three, but given that it was still not bad, I would highly recommend this series. Definitely check it out if you're looking for a cute rom-com for Valentine's Day!
