The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. UPDATED REVIEW MY OPINION : ****** I would like to start out this review by stating that this is undoubtedly m

King of Greed by Ana Huang
Genre: Romance

Powerful, brilliant, and ambitious, Dominic Davenport clawed his way up from nothing to become the King of Wall Street.

In his endless quest for more, he drives away the only person who saw him as enough.
It isn’t until she’s gone that he realizes there may be more to life than riches and glory…but by then, it may be too late.

Kind, intelligent, and thoughtful, Alessandra Davenport has played the role of trophy wife for years.
She stood by her husband while he built an empire, but now that they’ve reached the top, she realizes he’s no longer the man she fell for.
When it becomes clear that she’ll always come second to his work, she finally takes charge of her life and puts herself first—even if it means leaving the only man she’s ever loved.
But what she didn’t count on was his refusal to let her go…or for him to fight for their marriage, no matter what it takes.
King of Greed is a steamy marriage in trouble/second chance romance. It's book three in the Kings of Sin series but can be read as a standalone.

MY OPINION: ***

I'm just not sure that this series is for me. I was really excited for all of the books in this series to be released because I did really enjoy the Twisted series by Ana Huang but so far, all of these have been very mediocre and underwhelming. They're fun to read and pass the time away but none of them have really gripped me and made me stay up to all hours of the night poring over its pages. None of them have awakened any butterflies in my stomach or made me cry (figuratively) over the characters.

I was most excited for this one (so far) when I heard the tropes. It's about Dominic and Alessandra, an already married couple whose relationship has hit the rocks, mostly due to Dominic's treating Alessandra as a given instead of a wife. He kind of saw her as someone who would always be there for him, no matter how awful of a husband he was, missing anniversaries and prioritizing work over his marriage to the point that Alessandra finally gave up and stood on business (thank god).

This causes Dominic to realize how much he didn't know he had and the entirety of the book is spent showing the rekindling of their relationship and Dominic's newfound resolve to be a better husband and a better man. I've never read a romance book with this particular trope so I was excited, since it sounded so interesting.

Ultimately, it was all very mediocre. I liked seeing the relationship between Alessandra and Dominic slowly build back up again, like a second chance romance. However, I am never a fan of books where they pivot back and forth between the past and the present and while I understand why this book included so many flashbacks to when they had first met and were falling in love for the first time, that really turned me away from a five star review. I honestly just don't really... care? about the past and I would rather focus on the now. Or even dedicate a couple of chapters to the past and then pivot back to the present, rather than segueing throughout a singular chapter from past to present and back again. It was very off putting for me personally and I didn't enjoy that factor of the book.

This book's title is very fitting. Basically all of the men of this series are billionaires but Dominic really took the cake. He didn't grow up rich so that has really put him on a mission to make the most money that he can and while I can honestly understand where he was coming from, it was very frustrating to read about a man who only cared about his money. His wife was right there and he literally acted like he was doing this all for her when in reality, everyone knows he was only doing it for himself and his bank account.

The actual groveling itself was fun to read but honestly aggravating at times. I don't really want to read about a man with such a high arrogant level of possessive behavior that he belittles Alessandra's other dates. She has the right to explore other options when he never saw her as a choice. I usually am a big fan of the jealousy trope but he was honestly so aggravating. You can't just do a full 180 and expect everyone to suddenly trust you that you do actually love your wife. Like please.

The rest of the plot outside of Dominic trying to get back with his (ex) wife felt like filler. I didn't care for the Roman storyline and was expecting all these crazy things to happen after the Twisted series. I honestly feel like this book could have been chopped down a good 100 pages and we would have had a just-as-mediocre romance novel as it was. However, I'd definitely recommend if you like billionaire romances with the second chance trope.

Main Character: Dominic, Alessandra
