The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. Fourth Wing - Rebecca Yarros

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Genre: Fantasy

Blurb (on back of book): Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die

MY OPINION: *****

This book single-handedly put me back into my fantasy era.

It's been a while since I've read any fantasy other than whatever the latest Cassandra Clare book is. I haven't had an interest in the genre since middle school and early high school so I was hesitant to start this one. However, I have been trying to instill a romance book ban and I wanted to try other genres, and everyone and their mother is obsessed with this book. Spoiler alert: I'm one of them.

I saw countless reviews, TikToks, YouTube videos and just about anywhere else you can find bookish content raving about this book. I always go into books that are this hyped with low expectations because I've been disappointed far too many times.

However, this one absolutely devoured. I'm writing this review VERY late (it's been three weeks but I just started school again so) but I still remember how much I loved this book. The romance was top-tier and the fantasy elements were not hard to get into or understand. That's one thing I hate about the fantasy genre -- the world building is almost always too much to get into without feeling bored or confused. However, this one was simple and jumped right into it.

It ended on such a big cliffhanger that I need the second book RIGHT NOW. I will be rereading this $30 book several times before then or at least my favorite parts of it just so I'm still up to date before the second one.

Violet is a goddess. I loved her so much and that's so rare for me. I usually hate the main characters and while she definitely had her annoying moments I loved reading from her perspective. She is strong and brave and determined and has all of the traits that you're always looking for in a fantasy novel. She's a girl's girl through and through and she really valued her friendships and her family over everything, which was so admirable. She's so funny and sarcastic and I LOVE people who have a little bit of wit.

Xaden. Do not even get me started with this man. I already knew this was going to be a Rhysand situation (aka I'm in love with this man). A lot of people hate his name but me personally, I ate that one up. XADEN?? So good. He's literally so perfect and I LOVED how his only sweet spot from his otherwise rough exterior popped up whenever he was around Violet. On his side, it may have been a little bit of the insta-love trope that we all know I hate but in this case, I ate it up. It was giving he fell first and she fell harder type of beat and I loved it. He's funny, he's also sarcastic (two sarcastic people bantering back and forth is the best dynamic prove me wrong), and he's so attentive and thoughtful. He notices everything she's going through and finds all the solutions to any problems.

I LOVED the dragons. Like, even the romance paled in comparison to how much I loved these f*cking dragons. They're so funny and protective and loyal to no end. I want one for myself. The bonds between the riders and the dragons were giving parabatai but in a much cooler way (I'm so sorry).

I am so glad to say that I found this book just as incredible, jawdropping, and addicting as everyone else seemed to. I literally finished this in two days when usually I take weeks to finish fantasy novels. It's so addicting and you cannot physically stop yourself from reading it. I highly highly recommend to anyone who loves fantasy-romance books. (Romantasy?)

Villain(s): I highkey forget what they were called but you'll find out if you read it
