The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. UPDATED REVIEW
MY OPINION: ****

This is my second time reading this book and although I didn't love it as much as the first time, I still found it enjoyable.

I really loved how the characters have grown and matured and changed throughout the series, especially Hardin. In the first books, he was bad-tempered, violent, angry, pessimistic, hated the world, and cynical. He didn't believe in love and played with girls. However, in this book, despite making more mistakes as usual, I truly believe that he understood what love was and was willing to fight for Tessa.

I absolutely loved Hardin when he was in a good mood, mainly when he was sweet, kind, and loving. When he wanted to be, he was truly a romantic.

Tessa started out the series innocent and unwitting. She was a good girl in every possible way. However, by this book, she has matured and has learned to fight back for herself against Hardin. Even though this book is by far the most tragic for Tessa, as many awful things happen to her, I admire her strength in coming out of her grief and emptiness.

My least favorite part of this book was the end. It was very rushed. There were multiple time jumps over years and I would have preferred a more in-depth look into Hardin and Tessa's future. However, this is a Wattpad novel and I am accustomed to the ten-years-in-the-future epilogues that come with many of the novels on the platform. But I wish that Todd could have expanded more as this is now a published novel instead of a Wattpad One Direction fanfiction.

Emery and Auden were adorable and I loved the relationship Hardin had with them, because it really showed the maturation that Hardin went through in the novels.

I loved the families that Tessa found for herself through Hardin. She had a love-hate relationship with her overbearing mother, who I have never liked. <spoiler> Her father passed away and that really changed Tessa's entire personality. </spoiler>

Ken, Karen, and Landon were amazing people. I loved how they were so caring of both Hardin and tessa even though they didn't have any obligation to them, realistically, especially Tessa. Landon and Tessa's relationship was amazing.

Vance. Wow. I don't even know what to say about him. But he and Kimberly were adorable!

I would recommend this book to readers looking for a dramatic, angsty, romantic, intimate love story.

Main Character: Tessa, Hardin
Sidekick(s): Landon, Kimberly, Karen, Vance, Ken, etc
Villain(s): Misunderstandings, death, etc
Realistic Fiction Elements: This book was real to life.
