The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. UPDATED REVIEW
MY OPINION: ****

This book is not the most disappointing sequel I've ever read but it's not as good as the first. If you don't know, I'm a huge fan of this series and have decided to reread it for a couple of reasons. I got it as a Christmas gift, the second movie is coming out, and I genuinely enjoy this series.

This book started as a Wattpad fanfiction which never ceases to amaze me. I can't imagine Hardin as Harry considering I never read it on Wattpad, though.

It starts off right where the first book left off and I love that. It didn't have an awkward, annoying time jump three months in the future. We see how a heartbroken, devastated Tessa goes running to the one person she has left, her mother. It is so frustrating but in the end, she only has her mother. We see the awful way that her mother continues to treat her.

We also get Hardin's perspective, for which I was extremely thankful for. I loved being able to see the world from his cynical eyes. Even though Hardin is emotionally abusive, and that is unforgivable, I can still see the pain and hurt he has lived through that has caused him to be that way. I do not want to make any excuses for the way he treats Tessa, but it's understandable.

A whole bunch of drama ensues and it's an on-again, off-again relationship thing for the whole book. Of course, Tessa and Hardin are endgame but so much happens that it's hard to keep track. It's like they found every possible way to make each other mad and break up and then they realize that they in fact, cannot stay away from each other.

I know this is a short review but as I've already recently reviewed this book before, I'm going to end it here. The writing isn't the most sophisticated but it's engaging and I managed to read a good three hundred pages in a day. I would recommend this book to readers looking for a romantic, new adult novel full of college drama, heartbreak, and love.

Main Character: Hardin, Tessa
Sidekick(s): Zed?, Steph, Landon, etc
Villain(s): Misunderstanding, lying, cheating, etc
Realistic Fiction Elements: All of this book was very real to life.
