The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. MY OPINION: *****
Summer Reading Challenge #1: A picture book

I'm currently doing a summer reading challenge where I'm reading 52 books over the summer (and probably the rest of the year) and the first requirement (and easiest) was a picture book.

Aww, this book was SO cute! I loved the message behind this tale. The book is about former Vice President Mike Pence's bunny, Marlon Bundo. Mike Pence is notoriously "anti-gay" and it was honestly amazing to see the revenge taken in this book in a seemingly-innocent way.

To sum it all up:

A boy bunny falls in love with a boy bunny.

This was actually considered a banned book when I searched it up (another requirement is a banned book), but I decided to read it for my picture book. The book is strongly focused on the LGBTQ+ community, which is why it was banned. Apparently, it's not okay for children to learn about the LGBTQ+ community which is honestly stupid and disrespectful. It's not like it's a bad thing. They see their parents in love (most of the time) so why shouldn't they see love in its entirety?

It's SOOO cute. The bunnies are cute and the fact that they fall in love is so cute. It's also entirely funny to watch them fight against the Stink Bug for their rights. I loved how we learned that even though someone is holding the power at the moment, with democracy, we have the right to vote them out again.

A large theme behind this book is standing up for your rights and voting for what YOU believe is right. I enjoyed reading about how these bunnies stood up to the Stink Bug and fought to be married because they loved each other so much.

This book focuses on love and standing up to people and making a change, all of which are great for children when trying to bring up one of these topics. I enjoyed reading this through and through and would recommend it to honestly anyone who has about five minutes.

Main Character: Marlon Bundo
Sidekick(s): Wesley, other animals, etc
Villain(s): Stink Bug, etc
Realistic Fiction Elements: This book was all real to life.
