Lucky in Love by Kasie West
Genre: YA Realistic Fiction
Blurb (on back of book):
Can’t buy me love…
Maddie’s not impulsive. She’s all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment—
She wins!
In a flash, Maddie’s life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she’s talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun…until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now Maddie isn’t sure who she can trust.
Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn’t seem aware of Maddie’s big news. And, for some reason, she doesn’t want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?
MY OPINION: ***
So apparently I forgot to write this review and it’s night and I want to read so this is going to be short. Plus, I’m writing it on my phone so I have no actual idea of what is long or short. Please excuse my writing, it’s late.
With yet another Kasie West read, I happened to find enjoyment and genuine interest, which I was pleasantly surprised to find. I thought I was a) going through a severe reading slump, which I really am, and b) was growing out of Kasie West, which I sorta am. However, this book was cute and not in a bad way.
Our protagonist is not-so-rich, non-impulsive, smart-and-organized Maddie (forgot her last name). She’s about to turn eighteen and she’s focused on getting a scholarship for college since it’s the only way that she will be able to attend because of her family’s financial status. On the night of her awful, no-good, depressing eighteenth birthday, Maddie decides to randomly buy a lottery ticket after she is urged by the rude cashier lady to do so. And
lo and
behold she wins around 30 million dollars.
Side note: she works at a zoo, has an addiction to both her coworker Seth and the anteater/anteater baby, and has two amazing friends who want her to come to Stanford with one of them (the other one is going to city college and isn’t as happy about it).
Maddie has always said no to Stanford, blaming it on her family issues and money issues, but suddenly she has won the lottery and her parents seem to be getting better with the MILLION dollars she grants each of them respectively. Now she has no reason not to want to go.
Suddenly Maddie has money and it makes her entire life become completely different. People treat her differently and she acts differently. She spends her money quickly and profligately (if that’s the right word
haha) and ends up literally:
*buys a $20000 yacht for ONE night
*buys a Corvette that’s $70000 and she’s literally 18.
*gives a
mil away to her brother who gambles it all away in like a month and spends 500K on a house.
*plus other crap, such as pizza, bowling, and a 500K real estate investment
that turns out to be a scam haha and this was her uncle (who she never met)
Everybody starts asking her for loans and she even gets a hate article on the internet telling her that she is being stupid with her money. She’s hurt by it when in
reality let’s be real SHE WAS.
However, I’m just going to say that I didn’t hate this book. Did I think Maddie was the stupidest person I’ve ever met? Duh. But I mean we can’t take that into account considering that I think every protagonist literally ever is stupid.
so hahahahaha
Seth was cute.
Ya know, there were some Asian “jokes” that I didn’t appreciate personally, being Asian-American, and I was glad to know that Seth also didn’t appreciate them and the author didn’t just let them fly freely.
Seth was honestly adorable. I found his obvious attraction to Maddie
cute even though stupid-ass Maddie didn’t notice for like 2947729294838 years. I loved how he tried so hard and never gave up. Maddie lies to him for the majority of the book because she likes how he doesn’t treat her differently because she suddenly has money.
and now the real tea
We find out at the end that Seth knew about Maddie’s money for the entire book. He tells her that he was waiting for her to tell him and he just never decided to bring it up because he didn’t want to make things awkward between them or make her uncomfortable because she didn’t share it with him before. FIRST OF ALL BISH YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD HER.
Throughout the book, we see how Seth has obvious money problems as well and can’t afford to go to college. He plays it off like he doesn’t want to go but in one of the “cute” moments he decides to share his secret that he does want to go but can’t.
When Maddie finds out that Seth knew about her money, THE BISH DECIDES TO TAKE IT TO THE EXTREME AND OVERREACTS AND CLAIMS THAT THE ENTIRE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HER AND SETH WAS A MANIPULATION SO THAT SHE WOULD GIVE HER MONEY TO SETH TO PAY FOR HIS COLLEGE.
NOW
NUMBER ONE
NOOO
NUMBER TWO
HOW DUMB IS SHE
NUMBER THREE
POOR SETH
NUMBER FOUR
IS SHE SERIOUSLY THAT SHALLOW TO THINK THAT THIS BOY THIS REALLY NICE BOY ONLY LIKED HER BECAUSE SHE HAD MONEY
LIKE MONEY ISNT EVERYTHING HONEY
NUMBER FIVE
OH AND WHEN SHE FIGURES IT ALL OUT AND REALIZES SHES A DUMBASS SHE OFFERS TO PAY FOR HIS TUITION IN THE END ANYWAY
LIKE WHY DID SHE MAKE IT SUCH A BIG DEAL WHEN SHE WAS GONNA DO IT ANYWAY
now let me just add one thing: the
leth and
maddy story was the CUTEST EFFING THING I HAVE EVER READ AND HONESTLY DESERVES A STAR JUST FOR THAT
anyways
Okay, that turned out
muchhh longer than I thought it was going to be and now my thumbs hurt from typing.
I would recommend this book to readers looking for a cute short read.
