The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. MY OPINION: **

*Spoilers Ahead*

This is the sequel to the Famous in Love series and I wasn't the biggest fan.

For some reason, these two books felt like a letdown to me. Maybe because I was a fan of the TV show or maybe I was just looking for quick fluffy romance, but they just didn't reach my expectations.

-I didn't love the love triangle.
I honestly hated it. The characters involved felt flimsy and fake and didn't have any chemistry, though they claimed that they did. Also, I'm not used to Team Jordan even being a thing, being a TV series fan.

-Paige annoyed me.
I think she was wishy-washy, she was always trying to please everyone and ended up pleasing nobody, she wasn't loyal, she was distrusting of the characters who actually were loyal, she overreacted, she was a drama queen, and she blew everything out of proportion, something that I found strangely unlikable about her. Also, she was fickle and didn't know what she felt, claiming she was confused.

-Team Rainer went downhill fast.
What happened to Raige? I don't really know. The whole first book was #TEAMRAIGE the whole time but this entire book switched sides completely. It was all TEAM JORDAN ya de da. I don't even know who I shipped with her because I honestly felt bad about the guy who ended up with such an uncertain and confused character like Paige, who claimed to have matured when she really hadn't.

-The writing was overly simplistic.
This felt like a big change in writing from the first book, which may be a difference of opinion from other readers. I felt as if the writing in this book became a lot more middle-grade style rather than the mostly young-adult style that I was accustomed to from the first book. *This book was not middle grade, however, mainly because of the amount of "steamy" scenes.*

-I liked Alexis.
This felt so different from her TV character but Alexis was so sweet and caring in this book. She was there for her friends and cared about the other characters, as well as finding her own identity and navigating her own coming out and acceptance of herself.

-The whole book felt like it jumped around.
There really wasn't a big whole plot. It was more like "ooh we've got a wedding" or "ooh now we're in Maui" or "ooh Cassandra and Jake are here" or "ooh I like Rainer but I also like Jordan." It just felt as if the book didn't really have a sense of direction as to where it was going.

Overall, I would not read this book again. However, while I was at it, it was nice because it was a quick fun read that didn't take too much commitment. I would recommend to readers looking for a light, melodramatic, and paparazzi-filled short novel.

Main Character: Paige
Sidekick(s): Rainer, Jordan, Alexis, Cassandra, Jake, etc
Villain(s): Paparazzi, tabloids, rumors, etc
Realistic Fiction Elements: This is all very real to celebrity life.
