Forget You by Jennifer Echols
Genre: YA Realistic Fiction
Blurb (on back of book):
Why can't you choose what you forget ... and what you remember?
There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four-year old girlfriend. Like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school. Feeling like her life is about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon. But then Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day there’s one thing she can’t remember at all--the entire night before. Did she go parking with Brandon, like she planned? And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug--of all people-- suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them? Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much is a blank to her. Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life--a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon, and strangely full of Doug.
MY OPINION: ****
I really enjoyed reading this book and was tempted to rate this book five stars. But there were just so many little things that compiled up and up until I decided that the book had to be four stars.
The language of this book was pretty at some points and crude at others. Our protagonist, Zoey, uses words such as "ho" to define herself and it really annoyed me for some reason. However, a lot of it was really good so that made up for it.
Zoey herself was sometimes annoying but you have to give her credit because she suffers from amnesia after a car accident. The whole story was a little cliche and predictable and we all knew what happened to her. She also was just a confusing character who didn't completely make sense to me sometimes. Like, she would just talk to one person and then in the next couple of pages get in a fight with them.
Doug was a sweetheart and I absolutely loved him. I think he was meant to portray a little of that bad boy man-whore kind of a thing, but for me, I got a completely different vibe, more like a broken character which seems to be a huge trend around YA fiction. He was also honest and sweet, which I appreciated because a lot of guys have been jerks in books lately. *ahem*Brandon*ahem*
Brandon really annoyed me because he was so cruel to his supposed "girlfriend" and treated all girls like toys. To be honest, I expected it of him but to think that Zoey would be as stupid as to think that he actually loved her. I never really got a relationship vibe between them. They were never together and the whole book focused around Doug and Zoey rather than her supposed boyfriend. Also, did Zoey need to say "Brandon's my boyfriend" ten times a page?
Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this book. There were just so many things about it that made me love. I thought that it was going to be short but it turned out to be a lot longer than I thought. I know this review itself is super short but I've been trying to shorten my reviews so...
I would recommend this book to readers who like romance and YA.
