The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. The Summer I Turned Pretty - Jenny Han - UPDATED REVIEW

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
Genre: YA Romance/Realistic Fiction

Blurb (on back of book)Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

MY OPINION: ******

Okay, so I reread this on a whim during English class and loved it even more than before.

Generally, when I reread books, my ratings go down for whatever reason, but in this case, I brought it up to SIX stars. Six stars are hard to achieve: On GR I have about NINE of those. So yeah, this book stayed incredible.

READ MY OLD REVIEW ONCE YOU ARE DONE WITH THIS ONE: The Summer I Turned Pretty.

So let's start with WHY I reread it. I got two of my friends REALLY into the series (and these are my friends who HATE reading) and when I went to hang out with one of them I saw it on their bookshelf. I picked it up and started reading. Soon after, I finished it in English class when we had a free period (which most people spent playing games or watching YouTube so HEY I was a good child).

I LOVE CONRAD SO FREAKING MUCH I CAN'T EVEN. He is definitely one of my favorite male characters in any book I've read, and I've read a LOT about handsome dudes. He is amazing and even though he acted kind of jerky and rude, the flashbacks really helped me to understand his character and forgive his behavior, especially considering what was happening in his life.

Jeremiah. Love him, even though he's a little too much of a "player" or whatever you may call it. I love how he was so easy with Belly and even though he admitted his true feelings, was nice enough to leave it alone, even though the part where HURT FLASHES IN HIS EYES made me want to scream, had I not been in class.

Belly. She seems really immature and kind of stupid but I really liked reading from her perspective. I kind of feel like her character was meant to be kind of childish and that this summer, she's really starting to blossom and mature. She was definitely someone that I could be friends with if she was real.

Cam. I didn't TRULY hate him but I did dislike him but ONLY because he was barging in on my Conrad/Belly (Celly??) shipping for half of the book. He was also really nerdy which I enjoyed because most guys in romance novels are KINDA dumb, am I right?? And the Latin and the Japanese and stuff... wow. As you should know, my opinion of him changed a little. Before, I full out HATED him but I appreciate his character now.

Steven. He was kind of always in the way but when he left to check out colleges or something, it was kind of sad. I really was enjoying reading about him, both from the flashbacks and the little bit of present tense that we can see from him.

Susannah. I love her so much. She sounds amazing and kind and gorgeous and perfect. I love how her everlasting friendship with Belly's mom never faded. Even when she got sicker.

BELLY'S MOM WAS AS ANNOYING AS EVER. Sure, other moms in other books or even in real life can be more annoying (SORRY TO MOMS OUT THERE) but this mom was still REALLY getting on my nerves. Her thought process about teenagers was IDIOTIC and I hated it. So much.

AFTER THIS BOOK I LOVE THE NAME CONRAD. Is that weird?

Again, the ending was really confusing but I cannot wait to reread the next books *DUH OF COURSE I WILL IF YOU WERE WONDERING BEFORE*

I would recommend this book to CONTEMPORARY searchers and readers!

Main Character: Belly
Sidekick(s): Conrad, Jeremiah, Steven, Cam, etc
Villain(s): Changing, cancer, etc
Romance/Realistic Fiction Elements: It was all real to life and featured romantic relationships.
