The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.
Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

MY OPINION: ***

This felt very similar to Daemon and Katy's romance which I get was supposed to be like that but I would have liked just a little more diverse relationship-building.

This was a novella but for some reason, it took me a lot longer to finish than I expected. I would definitely recommend reading the rest of the series before reading this prequel because it will make a lot more sense and will make the characters seem a lot more developed, which is nice to understand their personalities while reading.

This novella felt like a filler story but it was interesting and piquant at the same time. It definitely gives the less noticeable characters of the main Lux series more personality and character that we didn't get to see of Dawson and Bethany. For example, in the main series, Bethany's character really ticked me off but now that I got to read from her perspective, it was really nice to see her side. I ended up liking her a lot better than I did before.

If you're not into the snarky, sarcastic, bad-boy Daemon, then Dawson is the brother for you. He looks like the exact same person as Daemon but is good, nice, and sweet.

I would have liked to have seen more relationship building rather than insta-love but seeing as it was a novella and there was a short amount of pages, it was hard to feel the "magic" of their romance. I did love it once it got going and they were so cute together.

All in all, this was a satisfying prequel and I would recommend this book to readers looking for a more in-depth addition to the Lux series!
