The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. MY OPINION: *****

YET ANOTHER 5-star book from Simone Elkeles!

I love this book and I love this author. Her books have made my life that much better. I love her characters, her writing style, everything. This is honestly going to be a relatively short review but I just want to say that I love her!

**Sorry if I misspell something (THE T IS STICKY ON MY KEYBOARD)

I just want to say that I loved Derek. He wasn't exactly sweet but I love how he determined his life, how he was independent, how he was brave and helpful and funny. That's one thing I love about Simone Elkeles: Her writing is hilarious.

Ashtyn was also a fun character. I didn't hate her like I generally hate protagonists and I thought that her character was a firmer, stricter, and more independent character than I am used to. She was brave and fiesty and beautiful.

The romance between Derek and Ashtyn was a tiny bit cliche--however, I'm totally on board with that, seeing as I love cliche things! Especially romances :D Derek and Ashtyn were so sweet together!

I did hate how long it took for them to get together. That seems to be a running theme in these books nowadays: one of them plays hard to get, one of them has a shattered past, one is trying to closer him/herself off from the world, one of them is a bad boy and the other can't chance it. I wish that they had gotten together sooner because to me, the ending was the most enjoyable part, and not because the book was almost over, but because it was sweet.

I felt like all of the really sweet scenes in this book were interrupted. That kind of nettled me but I pressed on and I loved the book!

I would recommend this book to readers who like romance!

Main Character: Derek, Ashtyn
Sidekick(s): Friends, Monika, etc
Villain(s): Misunderstandings, love, etc
Realistic Fiction Elements: All of this book was very real to life.
