The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. Genre: YA Dystopian

Blurb (on back of book): Fan favorite character Kenji Kishimoto narrates t his gripping companion novella to Tahereh Mafi’s New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, set during the explosive events in Restore Me!
Juliette is still reeling from Warner's betrayal, and Kenji is trying to balance his friendship with her with his responsibilities as a leader of the resistance against the Reestablishment. Things get even more interesting when an unexpected person from Omega Point’s past surfaces.
The ending of Restore Me left readers gasping, and this novella full of Kenji’s signature sass and big heart is the perfect story to tide fans over until Defy Me, the shocking fifth book in the Shatter Me series, hits shelves in April 2019.

MY OPINION: ****

I actually enjoyed this novella more than I thought I would. I adore Kenji and his character and I loved getting to see more about him, especially his relationship with Nazeera. He deserves more than what he has, especially from his friends.

The funny guy is often pushed aside. People don't think there's more to them than the humor that they shield their feelings with. Kenji's character is a victim to that neglect and my heart broke for him. He's alone despite the fact that there are people all around him because nobody understands him or cares to look deeper into his character, choosing only to see what's on the surface. That is why I love his relationship with Nazeera because she is able to see past his humor and see the real him, especially because he's so flustered in her presence.

Poor Kenji. My heart broke for him throughout the novella as he spoke about how truly alone he was. He wanted to love someone and feel something for someone the way that Warner and Juliette do for each other and I loved him for that. I hope he ends up with Nazeera because he deserves that at the very least.

I loved seeing his relationship with Warner growing as well because they're more alike than they think. I loved seeing them slowly start to trust each other and realize that they could be good friends.

Kenji is the glue that holds everyone together and he deserves more than what he gets. I hope to see more character development in the upcoming books for him and finally allowing him to experience the relationship and love he deserves. I would recommend reading this novella if you like Kenji because it provides a lot more details about his life and gives reader a closer look into his character than what you get in the main series.
