The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. MY OPINION: ****
Bonus Summer Reading Challenge #13: A manga

I read this book as a part of a huge volume of the Orange collection. Therefore, I’m going to write short short reviews for these volumes because they were all really short.

I’ve never read manga before, mainly because the idea of it never really interested me. However, I’m in the biggest reading slump of my life and I was desperate to try something new.

It was not bad. I really liked the storyline and this was more of an introductory volume than anything. We got to know all of the different character’s and their stories, as well as the basic plot line.

The main character gets a letter from herself ten years in the future. At first, she doesn’t believe it but it tells her everything that’s going to happen in her present and these things all start to happen. She meets a new boy in her class whom the letters focus around “saving”, though we don’t get much further context than that.

Along the way, we meet a group of friends who all seem to be living relatively normal lives. The MC is worried about the letter she received and she bases a large portion of her decisions around it.

I found this idea very interesting and original. I was happy to continue reading as the story developed and got more emotional and complicated than it originally seemed to be.

I would recommend this book to readers looking for a deep, personal, and lengthy sci-fi-like romance manga.

Main Character: Naho
Sidekick(s): Kakeru, Suwa, etc
Villain(s): Death, depression, etc
Sci-Fi Elements: This book has elements of time travel
