The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - UPDATED REVIEW

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  Genre : Classics Blurb (on back of book) : Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind. A FORBIDDEN LOVE
Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.

MY OPINION: ****

I have very mixed feelings about this book.

FIRST, let me just apologize for NOT reviewing! I finished this book a couple of days ago but never got around to writing this review. SO here we go!

When starting this book, I was SUPER excited. For some reason, I was just really happy to start this book. I never read any reviews about it before so I had no clue as to whether people liked this book or not. However, I had seen it around a LOT and the cover was beautiful and it started out really well.

As the story progressed, I think I got less excited. NOT that it was "bad" or "boring" but instead because something about it just didn't click with me. I want to say that I really enjoyed reading this book but the middle part had me feeling a little more on the two- or three-star rating side rather than the final four I gave. I just thought my energy kind of tampered out and I honestly cannot say WHY.

I read a couple of reviews after finishing the book that, to be completely honest, were SUPER harsh. I mean, I try my best to be honest AND "nice" in my reviews but some people have the courage to say whatever they want to say. I have trouble with being THAT mean but still... the things they said were agreeable. I'm not going to mention anyone or "plagiarize" but I just wanted to mention this.

The characters:

Patch. I had very mixed feelings about him. On the one hand, I absolutely LOVED him. However, he came off as very... creepy. I think that there were just things about him that made him a little more scary rather than "dark and mysterious". He seemed to be everywhere at once and was in places that made him very stalkerish. However, I loved his personality, his humor, and his character.

Nora. I thought she came off as more "introverted" or cautious in the beginning, but as the story went on, I could really see the changes she went through as she opened up, became "braver" and was just a stronger person in the world. She was very curious and sometimes I thought she was what you call nosy but I understand where she was coming from, Patch being so dark and mysterious and Elliott coming off as carrying so many secrets.

Elliott. He was SCARY. I couldn't understand his character. He started off charming and then slowly crossed the line to being creepy. I never thought he was the murderer because, well, red herrings??, but he definitely came off as being creepy.

Jules. He scared me. I can't even speak about him. He was kind of a background character at first but definitely became more prominent.

The writing in this book was what really bothered me. NOT that it was BAD but because it was so "short." I appreciate longer, more complex sentences and instead I got short quick sentences. However, I loved the details and the description because it was very REAL. I feel like a lot of authors don't really do this... however, sometimes it got a little off track from the story itself.

I have to cut this short because I have another review to write so... I would recommend this book to readers looking for angel/human romance..

Main Character: Nora
Sidekick(s): Patch, Vee, etc
Villain(s): Jules, Elliott, etc
Fantasy Elements: This is all very unreal to life.
